Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology
The IMCB was established in 2002. To foster cutting-edge research in biological sciences and to translate laboratory hypothesis-driven discoveries into advances in biomedicine and biotechnology, we focus on establishing cellular and animal models to excel in investigations of infectious diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. Specific research interests include
- Molecular mechanisms of speciation, conservation and cellular mineralization
- Land plant evolution
- Glycobiology for targeted drug discovery and delivery
- Signal transduction in carcinogenesis
- Axonal and intraflagellar transport in Caenorhabditis elegans
- Pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori and Candida albicans
- Molecular immunology
- Cancer stem-cell biology and cancer epigenetics
- Virus-mediated genomic instability and tumorigenesis
- Avian evolutionary genetics and genomies
- DNA double strand break repair
The IMCB has access to advanced equipment such as a High Throughput Genome Analyzer, cell sorter, and state-of-the art in vivo imaging systems. In addition, we maintain continuous collaboration with international laboratories at Johns Hopkins University (USA), University of Southern California(USA), Oxford University (UK), University of Basel (Switzerland), University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Tsinghua University (China), Xiamen University (China), Yunnan Normal University (China) and more. Our goals are to become a successful player in the global science league and to train potential leaders in both academics and industry. Current IMCB members include 15 principal investigators, 3 adjunct professors , 2 postdoctoral researchers and 70 graduate students. IMCB alumni have made outstanding contributions to superb academic research, biotechnology, biomedicine, conservation biology, intellectual property & technology licensing, entrepreneurship as well as science & technology management.
Educational Goals
To train young researchers in Advanced Molecular and Cellular Biology and to nurture their ability to explore global scientific knowledge, with the ultimate aim of advancing the development of national basic biomedical research and applied research of the biotech industry.
